Merit Ontario is committed to simplifying apprenticeships for Ontario contractors. Our program makes the apprenticeship process easy by handling registration and paperwork, so you can focus on growing your business.
Ontario’s construction industry is competing for a limited pool of skilled workers, yet only 15 percent of small and mid-sized construction companies currently offer apprenticeship programs. Many contractors tell us they want to take on apprentices but don’t have the time or resources to handle all the requirements.
That’s why we created Merit for Apprenticeship—a free, government-funded program that works directly with open shop contractors to simplify every step of the apprenticeship process.
“Managing apprenticeship requirements, like registering apprentices and handling all the necessary paperwork, can be time-consuming,” explains Rob Bartolotta, our Workforce Development Program Manager. “We stay on top of everything so employers can focus on running their business.”
We take care of registration, tracking, and communication with Skilled Trades Ontario, while also providing the mentorship and encouragement apprentices need to stay motivated.
Our wraparound approach includes reminders about class offers, exam prep, tutoring, and ongoing support. We personally reach out to apprentices to make sure they’re ready for school and progressing through their training.
“Nationally, only 20 percent of all apprentices complete their training within the allotted timeline,” says Rahn. “Merit for Apprenticeship currently has a 97 percent retention rate.”
Financial stress can make it difficult for apprentices to stay in the program. We guide them through available grants, financial aid, and employment insurance options designed to support them during in-school training. By offering this guidance, we help apprentices stay focused and complete their journey successfully.
Our mission is to make apprenticeship management simple, efficient, and effective. We handle the administrative work behind the scenes so you can focus on your team and your projects.
“Employers don’t have to worry, because everything is handled behind the scenes,” says Bartolotta. “That frees them up to focus on growing their business.”
If you’re ready to grow your workforce and invest in the next generation of skilled trades, we’re here to help every step of the way.
