New Safety Courses: Ladder & Tool Training

Introduction

Safety doesn’t happen by accident—especially when it comes to working at heights or handling tools. That’s why Merit Ontario is proud to introduce two online safety courses, specially crafted for construction workers, tradespeople, apprentices, and supervisors across Ontario. These self-paced, 40-minute training modules reinforce compliance with provincial safety regulations and empower users to create safer job sites.

1. Ladder Safety Basics

What You’ll Learn

• Recognize common ladder hazards and know how to manage them.
  
• Choose the right ladder for each task.
  
• Set up and climb ladders safely, following Ontario’s OHSA and Construction Regulations (O. Reg. 213/91, s.78–86).
  
• Maintain ladders properly and consider safer alternatives—like scaffolds—for prolonged work.

Why It Matters
Falls from ladders are among the most frequent causes of workplace injuries. This course gives workers and supervisors the tools to recognize risks, comply with legal standards, and build safer work routines.

Format & Certification

• Delivered entirely online via a user-friendly LMS, accessible on desktop, laptop, and mobile (including Brightspace Pulse)
  
• Self-paced, ~40 minutes in duration
  
• Final assessment (80%+ required) unlocks a downloadable Certificate of Completion
  

2. Hand & Power Tool Safety

What You’ll Learn

• Identify hazards tied to hand and power tools.
  
• Use and maintain tools correctly to minimize risk.
  
• Apply safety best practices to protect yourself and your team on the job site.
  

Why It Matters
Improper tool use remains a major contributor to workplace injuries. With OHSA compliance at its core, this course equips learners with practical knowledge to handle tools safely and confidently.

Format & Certification

• Fully online, self-directed through the LMS (desktop, mobile, and Brightspace Pulse supported)
  
• Approximately 40 minutes total
  
• Requires 80%+ on final assessment for a Certificate of Completion
