To my MPP,
I am writing you today on an issue of fundamental fairness for construction workers in Ontario.
Every construction worker in Ontario pays taxes that fund infrastructure, so shouldn’t every worker have the chance to work on those projects? Unfortunately, there are laws in Ontario that bars many workers from working on a job site paid with their tax dollars. It does not take a degree in economics to know what happens when 70% of any industry is barred from bidding: quality goes down and costs go up.
Closing competition to important public infrastructure projects unnecessarily increases costs to taxpayers.
The Kathleen Wynne Liberal government prevents contractors and their employees from obtaining work on large-scale projects unless employees become members of designated building trade unions. If they don’t, they cannot work.
This is unfair to 70% of construction workers in Ontario and we call on the Ontario government to end this practice
